Fire officials in Belchertown, Massachusetts have rolled out a new campaign directed at college students, dubbed “See It Before You Sign It.” Between 2001 and 2015 there were 85 fires in off campus housing, resulting in 118 deaths. Often when signing the lease on off campus housing, students do not see the property beforehand and therefore cannot assess potential fire risks.
The campaign has created a checklist for things students should look for when touring a potential living space. Students should check to make sure there are smoke detectors in every bedroom and on every level of the building, ensure that every room has two exits, and make sure the stove is in working order and that there are an adequate number of outlets.
