Between 2010 and 2012, there were 33,883 instances of theft in dorm rooms at colleges across the United States. With so many instances, it’s important for college students to be protected. While some forms of insurance cover dorm room theft, not all do, and for those that don’t many colleges are recommending parents buy renter’s insurance. Many organizations, such as National Student Services, Inc. and the College Student Insurance agency, offer such services for $79 and $92 a year, respectively. Even if your child is living off campus, it’s still recommended you buy a form of insurance for them, as things such as textbooks or laptops are easily stolen and sold. For coverage such as this, it’s generally between $10 and $30 a month.
